10-HOUR CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY BASIC SAFETY PRINCIPLES
This 10-hour course is intended to provide entry-level participants with a variety of training and an understanding of basic construction industry safety, health, principles and practices.
There are six mandatory course topics that comprise the core of the 10-hour program. Three of the mandatory topics specified by OSHA are listed below. The instructor will select three more topics from the list of required topics noted below as applicable to the needs of the class.
The remainder of the class will be used to expand upon the coverage of required topics and/or to teach other construction industry related safety standards such as; respiratory protection, confined space entry, or personal protective equipment. The optional subject matter selected for instruction will be based on the needs of the class.
The required course topics are:
- Introduction to OSHA, including: OSH Act/General Duty Clause 5(a)(1), General Safety and Health Provisions, Competent Person Subpart C, Struck By, Caught in/between, and Recordkeeping (CFR Part 1904)
- Subpart K: Electrical
- Subpart M: Fall Protection
- The Instructor must cover at least Three of the following topics: One-half to One Hour Each.
- Subpart E: Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment
- Subpart H: Materials Handling, Storage, Use and Disposal
- Subpart I: Tools-Hand and Power
- Subpart L: Scaffolds
- Subpart N: Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Elevators, and Conveyors
- Subpart P: Excavations
- Subpart X: Stairways and Ladders
Course grading is based on passing a written examination with a minimum score of 70% and participation in certain hands-on exercises. Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive an OSHA 10-hour construction program card.
